So, if it's true that servers will be "red out" when you play SF with Patch 1.50 a server admin will have to choose if he wants BF2 vanilla rotation or SF. In which there shouldn't be IMO.
Lets look at the map rotation shall we...(pardon me if I left out any maps)
BF2 vanilla
Gulf of Oman
Kubra Dam
Mashtuur City
Operation Clean Sweep
Sharqi Peninsula
Strike at Karkand
Zatar Wetlands
Dalian Plant
Daqing Oilfields
Dragon Valley
Fushe Pass
Songhua Stalemate
Wake Island 2007
Blue Peril
Euro Forces
Great Wall
Taraba Quarry
Operation Smoke Screen
Armoured Fury
Midnight Sun
Operation Harvest
Operation Road Rage
Special Forces
Devil’s Perch
Ghost Town
Iron Gator
Leviathan
If I got all the maps that leaves 20 maps for vanilla BF2 rotation with only 4 for SF. This leaves SF as the odd man out. Which brings up another observation. Current SF weapons would not be integrated into vanilla BF2.

You are missing half of Spec Forces maps: Mass Destruction, Night Flight, Surge and Warlord. And Highway Tampa for vanilla.

With there being 8 maps in Spec Forces that is enough to warrant switching to it if you want to play those maps IMO.
Yeah it is unfortunate that you can't run a server with both, but I'm sure there are valid technical reasons why. Most likely the BF2 Spec Forces exe has been substantially modified to accommodate night vision feature, so if you were playing a vanilla map and a Spec Forces map came up in the rotation, the game would have to restart with the new exe. Then restart again every time you switched to between vanilla and SF. I'm pretty sure that would be pretty jarring and annoying to most people.
