Have you tried increasing the ticket prices?
The option's in the 'Staff Upgrade' screen i think; it can be toggled to Low, Medium or High, so this might be a way to squeeze some more cash out of your poor fans on home games!
Another option is to sell some players during one of the transfer windows and reduce your wage bill. A big club like Man Utd ought to have some fringe players you can sell on (or single, highly-paid star player... *cough* Ronaldo *cough*).
(Of course, you can't then up the wage bill again by buying lots of flashy new players. You must be stern with yourself!)
You can also try renegotiating the contracts of some players in the 'Player Contracts' screen to get them to accept a lower wage, although this is unlikely to work without a high-level Negotiator on staff...
